Even though it is very detailed, edershheim narrative flowed in an orderly fashion and I found myself intrigued by the descriptions of the various events.
A good deal of the book deals with the physical geography of Israel and records the sight and sounds Christ would have encountered on his walk from Galilee to Jerusalem, for example. Alfred Edersheim was a Vienna-born biblical scholar who converted from Judaism to Christianity. I was actually expcting a more esoteric approach which deals with the symbolism of each and every aspect of the temple. This is a rather famous reference book, NOT a “story of Jesus” per se.

The first part of the book is incredibly rough to read and if you find it unbearable just go to another chapter. A rarity indeed for Kindle books. Almost all of the material can be found in other Judaic df. I don’t think that anyone, not even ‘scholars’ can get it all, but every insight is faith building. I feel like I am living among them as i read. The flocks of sheep had to be kept in the wilderness and never allowed near a town except for one flock. I would highly recommend librs book. However, the information presented in this book is quite detailed.
I love the Old Testament, the history, and beauty of the Temple. These materials complement Edersheim’s discussion, clarify difficult passages, and illumine the reader as to the true, spiritual meaning of the temple and its services.
The book seems to be missing sentences here and there but makes up for it by repeating whole paragraphs almost randomly. David Lee has in his review pointed out that Edersheim used some “higher criticism” in developing this book, so be forewarned. It is so very worthwhile. This classic work successfully portrays the streets, the marketplaces, the religious conflicts, the people, and the places of Jesus’ earthly ministry. It was originally written inand although I have the updated version, it is still in old English.
