I found the novels to be engaging, gripping and all those related literary buzzwords.

That is, unless you were unfortunate enough to be Jewish. Some are hilarious, but most are ridiculous, and there are far too many for my taste.

In the first book, the author seemed to be trying very hard to emulate Raymond Chandler. All in all, an absorbing read. A lot of people really like this book. And again, I would argue that the triolgie detail about Berlin is so compelling on its own merit, and rendered so vividly and memorably, that one tends to forgive any errors in plot or taste on the part of the author elsewhere.

More importantly, if you like Philip Marlowe, you’ll like Bernhard Gunther, a tough ex-cop with no illusions about human nature, an appetite for alcohol, a wisecrack for every rough situation–you get the idea. In a German Requiemhe drops a reference to the Thin Manand there are other such trilkgie and commonalities peppered throughout the books.

I did thoroughly enjoy all three of the novels, and I think Kerr does a respectable job with his endeavor to replicate and revive the hardboiled detective genre. Kerr did some research, and the texture is right on. Another minor irritant is that Kerr uses a lot of Britishisms put in the mouths of Americans, Russians, and Germans alike.
