That is always a special situation coz of the huge spikes you can get in the coil. More and more cheap Mosfets. With regard to 9V and 5V input, I presume you mean supply voltage. Another thing to beware of in datasheets is Vthresh threshhold dayasheet. It’s a matter of Vgs ththe gate-source threshold voltage at which the FET begins to turn on.
The 20 Volt you probably saw in the datasheet, but that is the max voltage on the gate. See the reference below: The driver will have only 2 inputs, allowing off, fw, rev and brake. Switching speed indeed is important. The transistor may burnt. You are limited to a current of about mA.
