Tarun J Tejpal is a journalist, publisher, and novelist. He is a major contemporary editor and publisher and well known for his uncompromising journalism in carrying out the most controversial sting operation Tehelka in the March of that exposed the corruption in the Indian Defence Ministry. Obsessed with each other, they move from a small town to the big city, where the narrator who dreams of being a writer works feverishly on a novel, stopping only to feed his ceaseless desire for alcehmy beautiful wife.
It tells us we also write out our next lives as we live out our present. In the ‘Money’ section we learn he has inherited money from an aunt who disproved of his marrying a Muslim and so they spend recklessly and end up buying a home in Chandigarh. Then, and I’m not going to call it bad luck, because the book itself is deire gem of another nature, a colleague had given me Congo to read and I put Alchemy aside for a while.
As the ‘matter’ of alchemyy, desire is real and immediate, unscripted, rather than artifice or derivation. It captures the polyphonic voices of India with an empathy and authenticity rarely achieved before. Holmes uncovers a mystery in ‘Rashomon’ style. When I tej;al picked it up, it was so mesmerizing from the start, I almost didn’t want to believe it. Then, we’re on to our narrator’s family history, more of their relationship, odd-jobs they work to alcbemy themselves afloat, more random stories, etc.
The way the protagonist retraces the past is thrilling.
Each word in this book is fitted in like a precious gem. But you can still bear with all the descriptions of “desire”, fulfilled and unfulfilled. I could actually see myself reading it again some day.
After pages, the book actually picks up pace and reads like a decent dfsire. Implicitly, it is also a partial exploration of the risks of digging up the past, where the narrator’s experience is posed against the public “digging up” of the past by religious fundamentalists. The “hard-ons” of this class stand in a strange oedipal relationship to the “hand-outs” that used to obsess their parents’ generation.
About the Author Tarun Tejpal has enjoyed a year career as a highly influential alcheemy journalist and publisher. Share your thoughts with other customers. The boldness may tepjal you by surprise initially but the aesthetics are topnotch, lifting it way above the vulgar or the voyeuristic.
To call this book just that is to do it a terrible disservice! New readers might find it hard to digest but I have found it to be a truly great art of work. Let me throw in Punjab insurgency! It’s about praising the gods of reason. Tejpal, chimneys resemble phallus, rhino horn resembles phallus and anything which stands up resembles only one thing.
